The Phlip Your Whig

Phlip Your Whig for President’s Day!

While “Old Rough and Ready” sounds like the name of a bottom-shelf bourbon, it was in fact the actual nickname of former President and member of the now defunct Whig party, Zachary Taylor. In observance of President’s Day, we’re “gettin’ Whiggy wit it” by paying tribute to Taylor, the Whig party, and bottom-shelf bourbons everywhere with a bubbly variation on the old-timey Bourbon Blackberry Smash cocktail, the Phlip Your Whig.

Taylor was one of only two members of the Whig party to hold the presidency, the other being William H. Harrison who died while in office after serving as president for only one month, which explains his own very short-lived presidential nickname, “Old Sound Sleeper.”

Both Taylor and Harrison liked whiskey, Harrison so much so that he actually grew his own corn and owned his own distillery for a time. Accordingly, our new Phlip Your Whig Cocktail features an, uh… surprisingly affordable bourbon whiskey: Old Grand-Dad (actually not half-bad.)

*Please Note: Until you are at least 21 years of age, you are forbidden by law to read this and sample any of the bubbly delights in the Carbonarium.

You Will Need:

  • 2 oz. Old Grand-Dad
  • 1 oz. lemon juice
  • 1 oz. water
  • .50 oz. simple syrup
  • .5 cup of frozen blackberries
  • 5-6 mint leaves
  • Two dashes of King Floyd’s Ginger Bitters
  • 1 sprig of mint, and a few additional blackberries for a garnish

Please note: The amounts of the ingredients are appropriate for one serving. Use mathematics to multiply the quantities of these ingredients times the number of guests.

How to Make It:

  1. Muddle the blackberries, mint leaves, simple syrup and lemon juice in a rocks glass to bruise the mint and pulverize the blackberries.
  2. Pour resulting mush into a cocktail shaker with half full of ice.
  3.  Add the bourbon, water and ginger bitters.
  4. Shake briskly while whistling “Hail to the Chief” and marching in place.
  5. Pour contents of cocktail shaker into your Soda Sensei bottle.
  6. CARBONATE!
  7. Pour contents of bottle back into rocks glass packed with ice.
  8. Toss in a couple of extra frozen blueberries on top.
  9. Garnish with spring of mint.
  10. Okay, that’ll do.
  11. Enjoy!
